Rodolfo Morales (Mexican, 1925-2001)
Oil on canvas
Museum Purchase with Funds Provided by the Edward J. Gallagher, Jr. Memorial Fund
This painting is typical of Morales’ work, which is best known for its surreal subjects and bright color palette. In this painting the varying scales of the figures combined with the myriad spatial perspectives give it an ambiguity akin to a dream.
After he achieved public recognition and began selling his work, Morales gave back to his community by establishing a foundation which has supported public education, the planting of trees, and restoring Spanish colonial architecture in the region of Oaxaca, Mexico.
