Alan Davie worked quickly and without preconceived ideas, allowing forms to reveal themselves through his improvisational painting process. As he explained, “Painting is a continuous process which has no beginning or end. There never really is a point in time when painting is NOT.”

He often titled his paintings after they were completed—the titles served more as an identification system rather than a literal interpretation of the work.
