Grace Hartigan (American, 1922-2008)
Black Still Life 1953
Oil on canvas
Gift of Edward Joseph Gallagher, Jr.
Although many artists in the 1950s were promoting pure abstract art, Grace Hartigan often included recognizable objects in her work. She was one of the few women in the mid-twentieth century who received exposure from major museums and the press. However, she also faced unjust criticism from fellow artists and critics for her belief that abstraction and figuration could coexist in painting. Her later works moved further into representational imagery.
