David Smith, Drummer, 1937

David Smith (American, 1906-1965)
Drummer 1937
Gift of Edward Joseph Gallagher, Jr. in Memory of Edward Joseph Gallagher, Ann Hay Gallagher, and Edward Joseph Gallagher III

Smith was never formally trained as a sculptor, but he learned to work with metal when he was briefly employed as a riveter at the Studebaker automobile factory in Indiana. Drummer reflects Smith’s method of “drawing in space” where welded lines create the forms, leaving the sculpture open and transparent. The lines exert an expressive energy, as if they are a visualization of the drums’ sounds.
