Stuart Davis (American, 1892-1964)
Adit #1 (Industry) 1928
Oil on canvas mounted on Masonite
Gift of C. Leonard Pfeiffer
Although already well-established, Stuart Davis went to Paris in search of artistic development, which is where he painted Adit #1. The aesthetics of urban Paris aligned well with his interest in geometric forms. As he explained, “A street of the regular French working class houses of 100 years ago is always interesting because they are all different in regard to size, surface, number of windows, etc. There are a lot of such streets near where I live.”
A second version of this painting, which has a more muted color palette, is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
