Arizona Daily Star addresses censorship of artist Bailey Doogan
Jaidyn Martinez, a journalist at the Arizona Daily Star, highlighted the UAMA exhibition Ways of Seeing, which showcases the work of artist and U of A professor Bailey Doogan. Martinez discusses the history of censorship faced by Doogan's work, as well as the lasting legacy she leaves on the Tucson arts community.
Doogan is known for her raw depictions of the body, particularly the aging female form, which confront some entrenched societal norms and notions. Doogan's daughter Moira recalls the intense the backlash to her mother's work: “I remember us getting phone calls to the house that were harassing. She would talk about her struggles at work, how there’d be challenges at the art department and also just being taken seriously as a woman artist.”
