Mohan Samant (Indian, 1924-2004)
Gift of Edward Joseph Gallagher, Jr.
Born in India, Samant did his artistic training in Bombay (now Mumbai), Italy, Egypt, and New York. The modern art of Europe and America inspired his explorations in surface texture but the bright yellow line that surrounds this painting is likely influenced by Basohli art, a style of Indian miniature painting that was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and known for its use of brilliant colors. Composition, with its layers of thick paint, rounded forms, and deep grooves, shows the importance of experiencing a work of art in person.
