MUSEUM OF ART INTERNSHIPS
2007-2008


The UA Museum of Art offers a variety of internship opportunities for students at undergraduate and graduate levels, for credit or Non-Credit study. For additional information on a specific internship and to inquire about availability, please email the appropriate contact listed below. To apply, please complete the application form and provide required materials as specified.

Curatorial. This internship provides professional level museum experience in the curation of collections and exhibitions, collections management and the care of art works. Learn to produce labels for art works; catalog collections; properly store collections; conduct research on titles, dates and artist's biographies and individual art works; draft didactic and interpretive materials; assist in exhibition development and planning; assist in the storage of art works; assist in maintenance of museum collection records.

Education. Seeking majors in Art Education/Museum Education, Art History, Studio Arts, Education/Special Needs, Language Arts/ESL/ Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Performing Arts, and Sciences, to implement multi-disciplinary approaches to the museum experience. Opportunities include: research and exhibition-based projects; hands-on teaching and community-based projects; museum-based and school-based presentations; thematic tour development (incorporating math, science, sociology, history); and docent training art history courses.

Exhibitions. Entry-level experience in exhibition planning and installation and collections care. Learn the processes and skills required to: prepare art works for exhibition; install exhibitions; design and light exhibitions; properly store and care for art collections; handle and transport art works; construct exhibition furniture; and much more.

Marketing. Internships are available for students in three areas of study: marketing, communications, and graphic design. Students studying marketing will be exposed to the marketing process including brand identity and positioning, market research, and promotional campaigns. Communications majors will work on press releases, media relations, and publication copy writing. Graphic design students will assist in designing print and web projects for the museum, including marketing collateral, advertising design and exhibit display materials, with an opportunity to enhance their design portfolios.

Registration. General introduction to museum departments with focus on registration duties, including handling and storage of fine arts; fine art transport arrangements, insurance procedures, and condition reporting on exhibitions; Accession processes and procedures; collections and catalog information; location tracking and collections management; computer data entry and retrieval.
