Salpointe Catholic High School students
explore and interpret the theme of identity as conveyed in the paintings
and drawings of artists Laylah Ali and Turner G. Davis, whose work
is on view at the Museum through March 23, 2008.
The Education Department organized
this
exhibition in collaboration with
Salpointe Catholic High School art teachers Jo Valandry and Anna
Lemnitzer. Ten students were selected through an intensive school-wide
"call to artists," in which students were
selected based on private interviews and portfolio reviews.
The selected students toured Laylah Ali:
Drawings from
the Typology
Series and Turner G. Davis:
Fantastic Worlds and
discussed
the meaning, messages, style, and content of the artwork. Each student
artist then developed a 2 dimensional work of art exploring the notion
of self as it relates to identity.
The exhibition uses diverse media as a means of expressing young
artists' perspectives on personal and social influences that impact and
influence self-concept and individual character.
The artists'
personal statements are available as a downloadable Adobe Acrobat
file.
Earl Wheatley generously donated framing of the art for the Salpointe
student
exhibition.
