by the Edward J. Gallagher, Jr. Memorial Fund

In 1851, Watson was a nineteen-year-old student at the Manchester School of Design, where this work was completed as part of a Life Study class. He went on to become a painter and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite school. The mood of this drawing is particularly pensive and delicate and shows that Watson was interested in the psychological as well as the physical aspects of the model.

Portraits and Figurative Works from the UAMA Permanent Collection: an exhibition spanning four centuries (17th through 20th) of paintings and works on paper chosen by Lauren Rabb, Curator, demonstrates the superb quality and depth of the UAMA collection.
