Out of the Vault- Art Crime!

Willem De Kooning, "Woman-Ochre," 1954-55, Oil on canvas, Gift of Edward Joseph Gallgher, Jr.

November 5, 5:00 pm

30 years ago this November an important painting was stolen out of the Museum in broad daylight; it is still missing and the case is still open. To mark the anniversary, we’re producing a special November edition of Out of the Vault: Art Crime.

Very special guest Meredith Savona, a Special Agent with the FBI’s Art Crime Unit, will discuss art crime today. Museum Curator Olivia Miller and Registrar Kristen Schmidt will present on the theft of the de Kooning and the Museum’s forgeries. Art‐related criminal activities have a broad reach worldwide. They can seriously damage cultural heritage, as well as scholarship and art markets, while providing the opportunity for other forms of trafficking. This program will examine how art crime has affected the UAMA’s collection, as well as the art community at large. The presentation is free with Museum admission.
