Robert T. McCall
The University of Arizona Museum of Art mourns the passing of
Artist/Illustrator Robert McCall who died on February 26, 2010. Robert
was an artist of international stature, the foremost illustrator of the
US Space Program, and a visionary of mankind's future in space. In
2008, Robert and his wife Louise, a gifted artist in her own right, gave
Robert's lifetime collection of over 250 paintings and watercolors to
the UA Museum of Art. Their gift helped launch the Archive of Visual
Art at the University of Arizona, a repository for the private papers
that Robert generated during his career and those of other artists. The
archive facility at 6th and Park Avenue is undergoing renovation to
enable the storage of Robert's and other archives.
Robert McCall's work has inspired countless illustrators, engineers,
astronomers, and writers, while capturing the imagination of millions of
viewers. Robert's work has appeared in numerous books and magazines,
from major magazine cover illustrations to NASA Mission Badges. His
60-foot tall mural at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington,
DC looms over the crowd each day as millions of visitors find themselves
engulfed in his massive Lunar landscape.
Roberts's kind manner and eternal optimism will be missed by those
fortunate enough to have known him personally, but he will live on for
all of us through the imaginative genius of his paintings.
